"Through the Eyes of Love" Opening Reception Invitation

The International AIDS Conference is the premier gathering for those working in field of HIV, as well as policy makers, persons living HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic. The MAKE ART STOP AIDS project continues with works created by Daniel Goldstein and Gideon Mendel. Goldstein's Medicine Men will feature both earlier works created with medication bottles and two new pieces "Invisible Man" and "Medicine Mother". "Not Alone" The Durban Art Gallery, Durban, South Africa The Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa Spring 2009 "Medicine Man II" is the second project by Daniel Goldstein for Make Art Stop AIDS. Using the medication bottles of South African individuals living with HIV, the sculpture also incorporates dozens of brightly colored, hand beaded spindles, created by the craftspeople of the UMCEBO Trust. The colors represent different side effects experienced by those using the medications. A white disk beneath the sculpture outlines these in the corresponding colors. Visitors are encouraged to write down their own side-effects/medication experiences on the white disk. "MAKE ART/STOP AIDS" The Fowler Museum at UCLA Los Angeles, CA February 23 - June 15, 2008 Make Art/Stop AIDS is an internationally traveling exhibition debuting at the Fowler that explores how artists around the world are responding to HIV/AIDS and how their work raises awareness, inspires activism, and can ultimately help end global AIDS. Featuring examples primarily from the United Staes, South Africa, India and Brazil - four disparate nations whose distinct experiences with and responses to the epidemic make insighful studies - Make Art/Stop AIDS presents approximately sixty works including contemporary paintings and sculptures, photographs, performance videos, posters, animated shorts, digital media, installations and more to record the history of the epidemic, to appreciate its enormity, and to share information and ideas about future interventions. The exhibition features works by Robert Gober, David Wojnarowicz, Fiona Kirkwood, Daniel Goldstein, Jean Carlomusto, and the collective Gran Gury, among many others.
